AAL Standardization Roadmap

The objective of the German AAL standardization roadmap is to promote progress in the application and selection of the right standards and specifications and the wide-scale distribution of ambient-assisting technology and remedy uncertainty in this segment.

Core topics of the standardization roadmap

The need for developments in the ambient assisted living (AAL) segment is, on the one hand, due to the demographic development and, on the other, the increasing desire for comfort. To implement assistance systems for everyday use, regulatory principles must be taken into account because they are accompanied by a variety of safety-related and legal requirements. AAL is also characterized by a high level in interdisciplinarity which results in a wide variety of involved partners from sectors like medicine, technology and the economy and also require a wide variety of specifications. The AAL standardization roadmap and its contents help create clarity in the sensitive subject area of technology-supported living, and remedy uncertainty.

The core and cross-sectional topics of the AAL standardization roadmap include the support and fortification of results that have already been obtained and expressed recommendations, an overview of framework conditions and basic prerequisites to be met, an overview of the status quo of the already existing standards and specifications in the AAL segment, information regarding a need for action and recommendations for the future.

The AAL standardization roadmap and its contents take into account the need to identify and select specifications that are actually relevant to the system from the existing specifications. It also helps close existing gaps, in particular with respect to the integration and interoperability of the individual systems as well with respect to training technicians and quality assurance purposes. This should support and promote the strategic approach with respect to full consensus standardization in the AAL segment.

About the objective and significance of the standardization roadmap

The objective of standardization roadmaps is to inform the stakeholders in the respective subject area of important basic requirements and assist them in meeting them. To achieve this, standardization roadmaps provide an overview of the respective technology topic, in this case AAL, and the related standardization landscape and its organizational and content-related further development.

For AAL, standardization roadmaps also allow for the systematic processing of convergent technologies (cross-committee complex topics) and act as a basis for discussion and exchange between the experts from various domains (e.g. automotive, IT, energy). They thus provide for better understanding because they provide all of the participants the same foundation and offer new committee members a subject-related introduction.

Particularly with respect to important subject areas like AAL, standardization roadmaps emphasizes the need for early development and the significance of the topic of full consensus standardization.
