E-Energy/Smart Grids 2.0 Standardization Roadmap

The objective of the German E-Energy/Smart Grids 2.0 Standardization Roadmap is to illustrate necessary prerequisites for the implementation and investment security of smart grids in order to completely exhaust potential resulting from the energy revolution in energy supply for energy producers, consumers and electrical grid operators and to overcome existing challenges.

Core topics of the standardization roadmap

The conversion of the German energy supply sector entails massive challenges. The expansion and integration of renewable energies and the restructuring of the markets are examples of this. The smart grid, which connects energy technologies to information and communications technologies (ICT), plays a key role because the automation of distribution networks to intelligently synchronize power generation and consumption and expand the power grid is crucial with respect to the energy revolution.

E-Energy/Smart Grids 2.0 Standardization Roadmap

When building the smart grid, standardization is a necessary prerequisite because norms and standards are used for the technical implementation and to ensure the necessary investment security of smart grids. This is precisely where the German E-Energy/Smart Grids Standardization Roadmap starts and presents approaches and ideas that help ensure smooth and reliable communication between all stakeholders within the network.

The core and cross-sectional topics of the E-Energy/Smart Grids 2.0 Standardization Roadmap include the desired or required services the complex smart grid system will offer and the smart grid architectural model (SGAM) to examine the implementation options. The objective is to define requirements for applications and decrease complexity and to promote mutual understanding and build consensus.

About the objective and significance of the standardization roadmap

The objective of standardization roadmaps is to inform the stakeholders in the respective subject area of important basic requirements and assist them in meeting them. To achieve this, standardization roadmaps provide an overview of the respective technology topic, in this case e-Energy and smart grids, and the related standardization landscape and its organizational and content-related further development.

For e-Energy and smart grids, standardization roadmaps also allow for the systematic processing of convergent technologies (cross-committee complex topics) and act as a basis for discussion and exchange between the experts from various domains (e.g. automotive, IT, energy). They thus provide for better understanding because they provide all of the participants the same foundation and offer new committee members a subject-related introduction.

Particularly with respect to important subject areas like e-Energy and smart grids, standardization roadmaps emphasizes the need for early development and the significance of the topic of full consensus standardization.
